CLASS: WITCHES, HEALERS, SHAMANS

This class exposes students to the historic relationship established between women, nature, science, religion, and knowledge through the analyses of texts that belong to the fields of literature, history, philosophy, and science. We analyze literature, theological works, art, and political or science treatises to assess the many dimensions in which women have created their own knowledge, and transmitted in a masterful way across centuries.

We analyze how women have shown mastery over the natural and the social worlds, as midwives, entrepreneurs, sexual workers, witches, creators, innovators, healers, or shamans. We focus on themes such as: midwifery, gynecology, witch-hunts, surrealism, feminism, and ecofeminism, with a focus on the Hispanic world, but also encompassing both the European and the American experiences.
